Field Trip - Ron Miriello

Unfortunately I was late to this field trip because I was at his other office, but I still learned a lot about Ron in the hour that I was there. He talked a lot about his personal life and how he first discovered design. He then told us about how he works as a designer and what interests him. I found him to be very inspiring because he's been in the industry since before design because digital. Getting to hear how he adapted to the technological changes over the years and what types of clients he has worked with was amazing.

His studio is small, but he likes it small and quaint because he felt it represented him as a designer - friendly and easy going, but extremely talented. It also made it easier for him to meet people in the neighborhood since they were more inclined to pop in and ask what the business was since there is no exterior signage.

He talked about his travels and the importance of keeping multiple sketchbooks and writing down ideas even if you don't know that they'll get done. He also talked about the importance of having a hobby because he felt it helped him figure out who he was as a designer further down the road. (His hobby was collecting random items such as bike parts, rocks, and tools). He was very amicable and friendly so I found it hard to believe that back in the day, he used to be very rigid and harsh instead of emotional and easy going. I enjoyed this first trip and hope to get more inspiration from future field trips.
