Field Trip - StudioConover

Image
I thought Dave Conover was a very nice guy. I liked how chill his personality was and how he was easy to talk to. He gave us a lot of great advice on what to do when you're first starting out as a designer and shared many stories on his own personal experiences. The fact that he had been doing design since the 80's truly fascinated me.  Him and his wife do amazing work and have such a nice studio that is actually not that far from Mire's Ball. I learned a lot about architectural design and how they've adapted to the changes in design through out the years. Before today, I actually had no idea how exterior designers worked and just how much work went into it. Hearing all the stories of how Dave's wife wowed past clients was great to hear and very inspirational. I already know architectural design isn't my thing, but I love getting exposed to different types of designers on these trips because it helps me see just how wide the field of graphic design is. ...

Field Trip - Integrated Signs

Image
Aaron's place was unlike the other places we had been to because it was farther out and pretty hidden; but he later explained to us why he chooses to hide his sign business. A lot of people mistook his business for a regular printed banner/poster type of place so his solution was to not have a sign for his place and rely on word of mouth for advertising instead. I thought it was a smart solution because then he would only get serious customers instead of random walk-ins.  He talked a lot about the sign industry and how it's a branch of design that relies more on executing ideas rather than creating them. His studio was quite large and had a lot of big machinery as well as a million items to make signs. I learned a lot about what goes into making signage for clients and the types of materials they use, which I found fascinating. The funny thing I learned from him is that you don't choose the sign business, the sign business chooses you.

Field Trip - MiresBall

Image
Today we visited Jon Ball's advertising agency. His agency is not that far from downtown and is located in a neighborhood area which I thought was pretty cool. His place was very different from Ron's asthetic wise. It seemed bigger too but it fit Jon's personality. He talked a lot about his graphic design journey and showed us on a screen the clients he had worked with in the past. Later, he answered any questions that we had for him. A lot of us asked him about what to do when you're first starting out and he gave us a lot of valuable advice. The piece of advice that I found really useful was "don't be afraid to jump around from job to job until you find a place that you feel suits you." I found that to be reassuring advice because a lot of people settle in their careers and are afraid of change even if they would like a different atmosphere.  He later showed us the upper level of his business and I must say, it was beautiful. The layout was gorgeous...

Field Trip - Ron Miriello

Image
Unfortunately I was late to this field trip because I was at his other office, but I still learned a lot about Ron in the hour that I was there. He talked a lot about his personal life and how he first discovered design. He then told us about how he works as a designer and what interests him. I found him to be very inspiring because he's been in the industry since before design because digital. Getting to hear how he adapted to the technological changes over the years and what types of clients he has worked with was amazing.  His studio is small, but he likes it small and quaint because he felt it represented him as a designer - friendly and easy going, but extremely talented. It also made it easier for him to meet people in the neighborhood since they were more inclined to pop in and ask what the business was since there is no exterior signage.  He talked about his travels and the importance of keeping multiple sketchbooks and writing down ideas even if you don't know ...

CREATIVE BRIEF Client: Cindy Santana Project Name: Brand You Professor: MaeLin Levine Due Date: End of Semester BACKGROUND The client is me and the service is graphic design. I am designing a logo & branding identity system for myself that will help potential employers distinguish me from other designers. My strengths are illustration, flexibility, being tech savvy, creative, and open minded. My weaknesses are procrastination, speed, typography, and public speaking. There are opportunities for me to improve in all of my weaknesses through practice. I value art, nature, and the interaction between imagery and typography. OVERVIEW The project is designing a personal mark for myself along with visual vocabulary that will help me brand myself as a designer. The challenge here is to make a mark and visual vocabulary system that accurately represents me as the type of person and designer I am. I am a beginning designer as well so the system must be unique enough to stand...
